Peru was home to the Inca civilization whose empire was conquered by Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peru declared its independence from the Spanish in 1821, and defeated the remaining Spanish control by 1824. Today, Peru has one of the best economies in Latin America and boasts industries in mining and refining of minerals, fishing, and tourism. Archaeological monuments, beaches, and rainforests consist of the most tourist destinations.
